Until the 15th Century, this land was part of the great Mali
Empire. Timbuktu was a center of Islamic study. In 1898 French
rule was secured. The Sudanese Republic and Senegal became
independent as the Mali Federation, but on June 20, 1960 Senegal
withdrew and the Sudanese Republic was renamed Mali. In 1968 a
coup ended the socialist regime. In 1973 and '74 famine struck
killing over 100,000 people. Severe drought conditions returned
in the 1980s. In December 1985, Mali and Burkina Faso fought a
border war. @
